The term "Affordable Housing" is frequently tossed around in the media and in public discourse. But so often what gets built is the furthest thing from affordable. Many citizens get left behind and can only find shelter in unsafe substandard housing. Any why is affordable housing usually the ugliest buildings on the block.
The 3rd session of a seminar series entitled "A Citizens' Guide to New Urbanism", will have us explore the complex issues surrounding development of affordable housing. We will also discover why it is possible to create affordable housing that is attractive and welcome in most neighbourhood.
We will explore such concepts as lands banks and cooperative housing. We will also study 3 successful examples that prove it can be done.
